letter nonconformist 1 nonconformist 2

My aims in nonconformist were to highlight the level of conformity the majority of society succumbs to by drawing attention to some individuals who, in my opinion, challenge conformity and therefore risk being marginalised. I was hoping for people to see life slightly differently, albeit fleetingly, through engaging with others' different views or opinions.

I began by asking some nonconformist friends to record a day in their life with a disposable camera and notepad. I compiled the results into an interactive CDRom that I sent to other friends and colleagues asking them to respond to the contents. I then asked visitors, to Transition 3, to view the CDRom that was available as a large mouse-activated projection and to continue the debate by photocopying from the original photos and texts anything they felt strongly about and contributing it with their comments to a collaborative collage (January 2003, Newlyn Art Gallery).
