It was Silver who first introduced me to the holy well at Alsia. This was a place where, for centuries, people believed the water of the well to have healing power. Silver used to visit the well when he was in need of clear thinking and I began to use it as a place at which to grieve. On one of my visits I hung a pair of baby's boots in the tree over the well. This was a custom associated with healing. I was astonished when some months later I came across a drawing, by a woman artist, of the well and the tree and my baby's boots clearly visible in the drawing. I had performed this action as a way of letting go after a miscarried pregnancy. I wondered if the boots had exerted their own agency in connecting my grief with that of the artist who, I discovered, had lost two children in tragic circumstances.
